China will build two world-class giant power stations in the Jinsha River

According to the Xinhua News Agency, it was learned from the Planning Commission of Yunnan Province that China will begin the construction of two world-class giant power stations on the lower reaches of the Jinsha River at the end of the tenth five-year plan and the eleventh plan.
Li Yingde, deputy director of the Planning Commission of Yunnan Province, said that in 2004, the Xiangjiaba hydropower station between Shuifu County of Yunnan Province and Yibin City of Sichuan Province will be started. The planned capacity is 9 million kilowatts. Between the Yongshan County of Yunnan Province and Leibo County of Sichuan Province in the upper reaches of the Xiangjiaba Power Station, the construction of a 12-million-kilometer Xichadu Hydropower Station will be started in 2006. Both of these hydropower stations will be invested and built by Gezhouba, and assisted by Yunnan Province and Sichuan Province.
The Jinsha River's hydropower resources are mainly concentrated in the middle and lower reaches of the river. The planned installed development capacity is 59.08 million kilowatts, which ranks first among the country's twelve major hydropower bases. Among them, the middle reaches of Yunnan Province can develop a total installed capacity of 38.33 million kilowatts.
The hydropower sector plans to construct 12 hydropower stations in the middle and lower reaches of the Jinsha River. While Gezhouba built two giant hydropower stations downstream, Yunnan Province plans to build eight hydropower stations in the middle reaches. At present, the upper reaches of the Tiger Leaping Gorge Station between Yunnan Lijiang County and Shangri-La County have already started their work.
