It is expected that the production and demand of butadiene in China will be basically balanced in 2006. Therefore, companies should carefully build new devices to create new applications.

With Shell and CNOOC building a 155,000-ton/year production facility in South China Sea in 2006, Zhenhai Refinery's 150,000-ton/year plant in 2008 and Daqing Petrochemical Company’s 2007 production capacity of 70,000 tons/year It will be completed and put into production one after another. It is estimated that by 2006 China’s butadiene production capacity will reach approximately 1.3 million tons, and in 2010 it will reach approximately 1.7 million tons. By 2006, the total consumption of butadiene in China will be approximately 1.17 million tons in 2010. About 1.44 million tons. In other words, as long as the plant operating rate reaches 90%, it will ensure the supply and demand balance in the domestic market. Therefore, experts have warned that in the future, China's newly built and expanded butadiene equipment must be prudent, and should accelerate the expansion of its application areas.
Rapid growth in production and consumption Since the completion of the first domestic butadiene production plant in China in 1971, the butadiene industry has made considerable progress. By the end of 2003, China's butadiene production capacity had reached 933,000 tons and output was 858 thousand tons. It is expected that by the end of this year, the total production capacity of 21 sets of butadiene equipment in China will reach 1.145 million tons.
However, due to the current production capacity of China's butadiene can not meet the needs of the domestic market, so a large number of imports every year. According to customs statistics, the import volume in 2004 was 195,900 tons, which was approximately 44.15% higher than that in 2003, accounting for 18.4% of the total domestic consumption. From 1999 to 2004, the average annual growth rate of imports was approximately 17.44%. In recent years, with the rapid development of China's synthetic rubber and other industries, the apparent consumption of butadiene has continuously increased. In 1995, the apparent consumption of butadiene in China was only 411,100 tons, but in 2004 it reached 1,105,300 tons. From 1999 to 2004, the average annual growth rate of apparent consumption of butadiene was approximately 11.6%.
Slower growth in traditional applications At present, China's butadiene products are mainly used for the production of butadiene rubber, styrene-butadiene rubber, SBS elastomers, and ABS resins. The consumption structure in 2004 was as follows: butadiene rubber accounted for about 36% of total consumption, styrene butadiene rubber accounted for about 36.1%, SBS elastomer accounted for about 12.6%, ABS resin accounted for about 10.6%, and other aspects About 4.7%.
Butadiene rubber is the largest user of butadiene in China. In 2004, China's production of butadiene rubber was 397,000 tons, and butadiene consumption was about 383,000 tons. It is expected that by 2006, China's butadiene rubber production capacity will not have much growth, and individual lagging devices may even stop production, so the total production capacity of butadiene rubber may decline slightly. However, the consumption of China's butadiene-butadiene rubber is still growing, and the production companies will meet the demand by increasing the production load and operating rate. The output will increase year by year, and the consumption of butadiene will also increase accordingly. It is estimated that by 2006 China's butadiene rubber consumption will reach 400,000 tons, and in 2010 it will reach about 410,000 tons.
SBR is the second largest area of butadiene consumption in China. In 2004, China produced 469,000 tons of styrene-butadiene rubber and consumed about 385,000 tons of butadiene. It is estimated that the consumption of butadiene butadiene rubber in China will reach about 350,000 tons in 2006, and the consumption in 2010 will reach about 380,000 tons.
SBS elastomer is the third largest user of butadiene in China. In 2004, the output of SBS in China was 242,000 tons and the consumption of butadiene was approximately 134,000 tons. With the strengthening of the application of SBS in bitumen modification and polymer modification, the consumption of SBS will also continue to increase, and the corresponding consumption of butadiene will also increase accordingly. It is estimated that the consumption of butadiene in China's SBS elastomer will reach approximately 160,000 tons in 2006, and the consumption in 2010 will reach approximately 170,000 tons.
In 2004, the output of ABS resin in China was about 600,000 tons, and about 113,000 tons of butadiene was consumed. With the continuous development of China's information industry and automobile industry, the consumption of ABS resin will have a rapid increase. It is estimated that the consumption of butadiene in China's ABS resin will reach approximately 200,000 tons by 2006, and the consumption in 2010 will reach approximately 400,000 tons.
In other aspects, butadiene is mainly used for the production of nitrile rubber, styrene-butadiene copolymer latex, adiponitrile and hexamethylenediamine and other chemical products. The consumption of butadiene in 2004 was about 50,000 tons. It is estimated that by 2006, the consumption of butadiene in other areas in China will be about 60,000 tons. In 2010, the consumption will reach about 80,000 tons.
Technology upgrades and expansion applications Based on the current status of China's butadiene production, the author proposes that: First, because China's butadiene is fully produced using C4 fraction extraction, if butadiene products are to be extracted from C4 fractions, they must be based on market conditions. Support the construction of downstream production facilities. Second, at present, China’s butadiene equipment is generally small and relatively dispersed. Therefore, in addition to responding to technological transformation of existing production equipment, the manufacturer should further reduce energy consumption and material consumption, and improve the level of automation of the equipment. The original hydrogenation cycle is used as the raw material of the butadiene extraction equipment for the cracking raw materials, and strives to be based on the domestic design from design to equipment manufacturing to comprehensively improve the butadiene production technology level in China. The third is that the selective hydrogenation of the C4 fraction (KLP technology) can hydrogenate acetylenic hydrocarbons to butadiene and save energy. At present, there are more than 10 sets of devices in the country that adopt this technology, and China should accelerate this technology. Research and development efforts to achieve industrial production as soon as possible. Fourth, butadiene should be actively developed for other uses, such as converting it to propylene or producing adiponitrile and other chemical products to expand its consumption.
