Laboratory research and development to improve OLED light efficiency new ways: OLED luminous efficiency increased by 60%

Professor Kim JaeHoon of Hanyang University in South Korea announced a method of controlling the polarization of OLED light at the UBI conference in June to increase the luminous efficiency of the OLED light emitting layer by more than 60%.

In the LCD, two linear polarizers are used as light switches to transmit or prevent light from passing through the backlight. The OLED is different, using only a circular polarizer, used to prevent the reflection of external light, increase outdoor visibility.

Due to the use of polarizer, OLED brightness will be reduced by 50%, so that the original brightness of the OLED screen is dimmer. In order to improve the brightness of OLED displays, various display companies are devoted to improving the device structure, studying optical extraction technology and developing more efficient materials in an effort to compensate for 50% light loss caused by polarizers by improving the light emitting mechanism.

In response, Professor Kim, Jae-hoon think in a totally new way to improve OLED efficiency by changing the polarization characteristics of light-emitting OLED devices and reducing the light loss caused by polarizers.

Structural simulation of OLED devices containing chiral molecules

Professor Kim Jae hoon explains: "Polymer OLED luminescent materials generally produce high-linearity linearly polarized light.When this light through the luminescent layer containing chiral molecules, it can become a circular polarized light, in theory , The corresponding angle of circularly polarized light can pass without loss of OLED polarizer, optical efficiency increased by 100%, so that you can achieve lower power consumption, more bright OLED screen.

Using this principle, Professor Kim Jaehoon and his team developed an OLED screen that is 60% more efficient than the existing OLEDs. In the future, Professor Kim Jae Hoon will continue to study the polarization of light based on the small molecule OLED luminescent materials (Note: The current production of AMOLED screen using small molecule OLED luminescent materials).
