The Courier-News recently published an article about a heartwarming charity boxing event taking place in Aurora. Now in its third year, the Tuition Knock Out, organized by the National Latino Peace Officers Association (NLPOA) chapter, has grown significantly. This year's event will be held at East Aurora High School, offering more space to accommodate fans and raise even more funds for local students.
The main goal of the event is to provide a full scholarship for a deserving student to pursue an associate’s degree at either Waubonsee Community College or Elgin Community College. That means the recipient won’t have to pay a single cent out of pocket—something that’s incredibly meaningful for many families.
This year’s lineup promises exciting action, starting with 15 amateur fights led by Jesse “The Law†Torres Boxing Club. The night will conclude with eight exhibition matches featuring police and fire department members from Aurora, Elgin, and surrounding areas. These matches not only showcase community spirit but also highlight the pride and dedication of first responders.
Sgt. Alfredo Dean, president of the Aurora NLPOA chapter, explained that the decision to shift from smaller scholarships to full tuition was made to give students the best chance at success. Last year, Cristina Martinez received a full ride to Elgin Community College thanks to the event, which raised over $20,000 in total. Since 2012, the Tuition Knock Out has awarded $15,000 in scholarships, proving its lasting impact on the community.
One of the most anticipated matches this year is the main event between Aurora Police Investigator Erik Swastek and Aurora Fire Lt. Jeremy Allway. It’s expected to be a tough battle, with bragging rights on the line. Another familiar face is Aurora Alderman Richard Irvin, who previously competed and lost a close fight last year.
The event kicks off at 1:30 p.m., with amateur bouts starting at 2 p.m. and exhibition matches beginning at 5 p.m. Attendees can enjoy a variety of matches, including:
- Dave Sharp (Woodstock Police) vs. Eric Waitrovich (Fox River Grove Police)
- Eric Echevaria (Elgin Police) vs. Dan Henry (Woodstock Police)
- Greg Christoffel (Aurora Police) vs. Raul Rodriguez (Melrose Park Police)
- Lorena Hernandez (Aurora Police) vs. Heather Robinson (Elgin Police)
- Miriam Uribe (Elgin Police) vs. Tricia Malone (Cary Police)
- Richard Irvin (Aurora Alderman) vs. Juan Reyna (Aurora Township Trustee)
- Al Young (Elgin Police) vs. Steve Brandt (Bartlett Fire)
- Erik Swastek (Aurora Police) vs. Jeremy Allway (Aurora Fire)
Tickets are priced at $15 for adults and $5 for children aged 6–12. VIP seating is available for $50. This event is more than just a night of boxing—it's a celebration of community, education, and the dedication of those who protect and serve. Whether you're a fan of combat sports or simply looking for a way to support local students, the Tuition Knock Out is a must-attend event this Sunday.
Thanks, Dan.
