This report comes from Tim Olk:
On Saturday, July 23, 2016, the Chicago Fire Department’s Tower Ladder 10 was dispatched to a high-rise building on North Halsted Street after reports of four people trapped in an elevator. After initial attempts to reset the elevator failed, the crew requested a blind shaft response to safely rescue the individuals.
The responding units included:
- Battalion 3
- Tower Ladder 10
- Squad 1
- Squad 2
- Special Operations Chief 515
- An ambulance
The elevator was stuck between the second and third floors. Firefighters secured the area, locked out the elevator, and set up on the fifth floor using ropes to work their way down to the fourth. A firefighter was lowered into the elevator shaft and successfully located the four girls, who had been trapped for approximately two hours but were in good condition and remained calm throughout the ordeal.
The firefighters then carefully brought the girls down to the fourth floor using ropes, where they were assessed by paramedics. The entire operation was executed with precision and care, ensuring the safety of all involved.
Photos from the scene, captured by Tim Olk, show the efforts of the firefighters during the rescue. These images provide a glimpse into the professionalism and dedication displayed by the team as they worked to free the trapped individuals.
