Here's a message from Eric Haak:
Building on last week’s post, I’d like to share some extremely rare images from the well-known 1972 plane crash near Midway Airport. I don’t think much background is needed for this event. According to CFD records, the crash occurred at 2:29 PM on December 8, 1972, at 3715-23 W. 70th Place. The emergency response was classified as a 3-11 alarm. These photos capture the recovery efforts and were taken from a vantage point that the media wasn’t permitted to access. Two people on the ground lost their lives, along with 43 passengers and crew aboard the aircraft. Surprisingly, 18 individuals survived the crash. There is a video of the incident on YouTube, but the quality is quite poor.
United Airlines Flight 553 crashed into a row of bungalows on West 70th Place in Chicago while approaching Midway Airport on Dec. 8, 1972, killing 43 of the 61 people aboard and two residents. Eric Haak collection, photographer unknown.
