NFPA RELEASES 2017 U.S. FIREFIGHTER INJURIES REPORT

According to a report from NFPA.org:

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recently published its annual report on U.S. firefighter fatalities, revealing that 60 firefighters lost their lives in the line of duty in 2017. This marked the lowest number of on-duty firefighter deaths since 1977, when the organization began tracking such data. It was also the sixth time in the past seven years that the total remained below 70.

Of these 60 fatalities, 32 were volunteer firefighters, 21 were career firefighters, and the remaining 7 included federal employees, contractors, and even two prison inmates. Both volunteer and career firefighters saw their second-lowest death tolls in 2017.

Interestingly, 17 of the deaths occurred at the fire scene, which is the second-lowest figure recorded since the study began. This was also the second year in a row with fewer than 20 deaths at fire scenes.

In most years, the second-largest group of on-duty firefighter deaths happens while responding to or returning from emergencies. However, in 2017, the second-highest number—11 deaths—occurred at non-fire incidents. These included five at motor vehicle crashes, three involving downed wires, one at a fallen tree, one investigating an odor, and one checking for potential flooding during a storm. Ten of these 11 were struck by vehicles, and one died from a sudden cardiac event.

Another concerning trend was that 10 firefighters were killed by vehicles, far exceeding the average of four per year over the past 30 years. This highlights a growing risk on the roads.

Medical issues, including overexertion and stress, accounted for more than half of all 2017 fatalities. Out of the 32 deaths in this category, 29 were sudden cardiac events, two were due to strokes, and one resulted from complications after a medical procedure. While 29 sudden cardiac deaths were below the 30-year average, they still made up nearly half of all on-duty fatalities.

Despite the detailed reporting, it's still difficult to compile a complete list of all duty-related deaths in a single year. The NFPA continues to monitor and improve its data collection methods to better understand and prevent future losses.
