Police officers and firefighters collect water for residents of Flint, MI

Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:

Residents from the suburbs are coming together to support those affected by the ongoing water crisis in Flint, Michigan. As the situation continues, communities across the region are stepping up with donations of bottled water. Seven fire departments have become key drop-off points for this initiative, which was started by the Buffalo Grove Police Department. These locations include Arlington Heights, Grayslake, Round Lake, Schiller Park, Lake Zurich, North Riverside, and Utica.

The effort has seen a massive response, with cases of bottled water piling up at these stations. Donations can be made 24/7 until 6 p.m. on Friday at Buffalo Grove Police Headquarters, located at 46 Raupp Blvd. The Arlington Heights Fire Department alone has already collected 100 cases and delivered them to Buffalo Grove, according to firefighter Andrew Larson.

Buffalo Grove Deputy Police Chief Roy Bethge estimates that at least 2,000 cases of water will be sent to Flint. Initially, off-duty officers planned to transport the water using a truck, but due to the overwhelming public support, officials are now seeking a larger vehicle—specifically a semi-truck—to make the delivery more efficient.

Grayslake Fire Chief John Christian noted that since the campaign began on Monday, there has been a steady flow of people bringing bottled water to the department’s downtown location. This continuous support highlights the community's strong sense of solidarity during this difficult time.

Flint has been dealing with the water crisis since last year when elevated levels of lead were found in its water supply. Since then, donations of safe drinking water have been coming in from all over the country, showing a nationwide effort to help the residents of Flint.

In addition to the fire department efforts, the Lake County Housing Authority is also collecting bottled water and funds to support residents of the Flint Housing Commission. They are accepting donations of bottled water and checks through Thursday, February 4. The collection site is located at 33928 N. Route 45, just outside Grayslake. Donations can be dropped off between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Thursday, Friday, Monday, and Tuesday. On Wednesday, February 3, drop-offs will be accepted from 8 a.m. to noon, and again from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, February 4.

All checks should be made out to the Lake County Housing Authority with the memo line stating “Flint Water,” as noted by Northern, a representative of the organization.
