Solar panels: Is your roof suitable?

Meet the Wrights — a couple who are making a smart and sustainable move towards a greener future! In the picturesque seaside town of Clacton-on-Sea in Essex, Jonathan and Kathleen Wright have taken a step into renewable energy through Solar Together. Jonathan, a 60-year-old business owner, and his wife Kathleen started an eco-friendly journey by installing solar panels at their home. Now powered entirely by the sun, their home has significantly reduced its carbon footprint, one panel at a time. This case study dives into their journey, motivations, the installation process, and the benefits they've experienced.

Journey to Solar Energy

Q: What motivated you to install solar panels at your home?

A: “We’ve been thinking about solar energy for around ten years, especially after the introduction of the feed-in tariff. It’s all about being more energy efficient and doing our part for the environment.”

The Wrights’ strong environmental values, combined with their business’s shift toward using recyclable materials, naturally led them to invest in solar panels. The sharp increase in their business's energy costs also pushed them to seek a sustainable solution.

“Going solar was a natural extension of our commitment to sustainability. Our butchery business is moving toward recyclable materials, so it made sense to do the same at home.”

Q: How did you first hear about the Solar Together scheme?

A: “We found out about it through family in Harwich who had solar panels installed a few years ago. When the opportunity came up again, we applied — it was all word of mouth.” John adds, “My daughter-in-law’s family got solar panels through Solar Together Essex, which is how I first learned about it.”

Q: How did the council backing influence your decision?

A: “The main reason we chose Solar Together was because of the council support. When you're spending a lot on something like this, having that endorsement gives you confidence. It felt safe and trustworthy.”

Installation Overview

After settling into their spacious bungalow in Clacton-on-Sea, the Wrights decided to install a custom solar panel system. Their home, with a south-west facing roof, was an ideal candidate for solar installation. After years of consideration, rising energy costs and a desire for self-reliance finally led them to take the plunge.

The project included:

  • 10 Solar Panels: Optimally placed to capture maximum sunlight.
  • Battery Storage Capacity: 6.9 kWh to store surplus solar energy.

Cables were run from the solar panels on the roof, through the attic, and down into the cupboard. The Wrights praise the professional and smooth installation process.

Q: How was the installation process for you?

A: “It was quick and easy. We didn’t have to do anything. Everything was handled for us. It was hassle-free and straightforward.”

Jonathan adds, “I’m really happy with how the panels look — they’re sleek and modern.”

Impact

With their system now working, they’ve become more self-sufficient. “We hardly need to buy electricity from the grid,” Jonathan says, noting the benefits of the battery during winter and lower tariffs at night.

  • Annual Electricity Consumption: Estimated at 2,500 kWh.
  • Estimated electricity generation from solar PV system: 3,577 kWh.
  • Grid electricity independence / Self-sufficiency (PV Only): 27%
  • Annual Savings: Over £500 saved in the first year, with 3,577 kWh generated.

Q: What are your thoughts on the visual impact of solar panels on your home?

A: “We don’t even notice them anymore, and neither do our neighbors. It’s become a positive conversation starter with friends and family.”

Q: Have you made any changes to improve energy efficiency?

A: “We’ve switched to LED lights and energy-efficient appliances. We use an air fryer and slow cooker to save power.”

Q: How has your solar panel experience changed your view on renewable energy?

A: “It’s exactly what we expected. We don’t expect miracles, but we’re happy with the results and excited to see how it grows over time.”

Q: Do you think solar panels will affect your home’s resale value?

A: “We believe they’ll be a positive feature. As solar becomes more common in new homes, it could make our property more attractive to buyers.”

Their Advice

The Wrights’ experience in Clacton-on-Sea shows how individual actions can reduce environmental impact while also saving money. Initially concerned about upfront costs, Jonathan saw solar as a long-term investment. The council-backed Solar Together program gave him trust and confidence.

Jonathan encourages homeowners to see solar as a smart investment. “Go into it with your eyes open,” he says. “If you can afford it, it’s definitely worth it. It’s not just about saving money — it’s about helping the planet.”

Having overcome initial doubts, the Wrights are now vocal advocates for solar within their community. They share their positive experience with neighbors and friends: “We’ve already talked to people across the street, and they’re very interested.”

“Some family members have also gone solar, and I recommend Solar Together. I’m definitely an advocate!” he says.

Future Sustainability Plans

They are looking into further steps such as heat pumps and electric vehicle charging integration to reduce their reliance on gas and electricity even more.
