The Herbie Johnson Golf Classic

Chicago Fire Capt. Herbert T. Johnson, a man known for his larger-than-life presence, has left a lasting legacy through the Herbie Johnson Golf Classic. This annual event, now in its third year, is growing rapidly and aims to become one of the biggest golf outings in the city. With 10 courses across the Chicago area, the event expects over 1,000 participants this year—far surpassing last year’s turnout of 380 players spread across three courses.

“It’s supposed to be one of the largest golf events ever held,” said Ted Johnson, Herbie’s brother. “This is the third time we’ve done it, and it’s never been this big before.”

The tournament kicks off with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. on June 29. After the rounds are complete, a festive reception will take place from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 115 Bourbon Street, located at 3359 W. 115th St. in south suburban Merrionette Park. Attendees can enjoy grilled steaks and a chance to celebrate the life of a beloved firefighter.

Herbie Johnson passed away while battling an extra-alarm house fire in Gage Park on November 2, 2012. In his memory, the golf outing was created shortly after his death. Over the years, the event has raised more than $30,000, with funds supporting struggling firefighters in Chicago and a scholarship at St. Rita High School in Ashburn.

This year, organizers have joined forces with the FDNY 9-11 Memorial Golf Outing in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Herbie played a key role in planning that event and formed lasting friendships along the way.

So far, more than 100 golfers have registered for the event. The cost to participate in both the tournament and the after-party is $125, with some top-tier courses charging a small additional fee. For those who just want to attend the reception, tickets are available for $50.
