The stagnation of the import of waste materials at the port of Shandong, Tianjin and other cities near the Olympics

Recently, plastic traders in the north reported that the ports in Shandong and Tianjin have raised import tariffs, and customs officials have carried out strict inspections on each shipment, resulting in a sharp drop in waste imports. Many buyers went to Shanghai, Ningbo and other ports to seek sources. Although the goods in the Yangtze River Delta region are not cheap, they still have a surplus even if they are added to the freight rates imported from Shandong and Tianjin ports.
In fact, from the beginning of the new year, it has been reflected by customers in the north that due to the approaching of the Olympic Games, it is getting harder and harder to import waste materials. For China, the Beijing Olympics is a top priority. Because history has proven that a successful Olympic Games can drive the country’s economic growth. The 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games and the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games pushed the economies of Japan and South Korea to a new height. Therefore, governments at all levels attach importance to every detail and strive to present the best China to the world.
As the waste processing industry has a negative impact on the air quality and the water environment in the surrounding areas, customs authorities have raised tariffs and strengthened supervision in areas such as Shandong and Tianjin that are closer to the venues of the Olympic Games, resulting in a tighter import of waste. Although there is no explicit provision, the government controls the scrap industry through macro levers to reduce pollution.
In another 50 days, the Beijing Olympics will begin. Therefore, it will be more difficult to purchase overseas sources of waste during this period. However, taking into account the important position of renewable resources in the development of the entire national economy, it is believed that after the Olympics is over, the customs will adjust the tariffs to a normal level, so that the domestic recycling enterprises will resume production.
