Vintage Chicago 5-11 Alarm fire, 4-26-62

Here's a message from Eric Haak:

These are some photos taken on Thursday, April 26, 1962. The fire was a 5-11 alarm at 2710 S. Throop Street. The building was owned by the National Plywood Company and was located along the future route of the Stevenson Expressway. During the early 1960s, there were several major fires in buildings that were scheduled for demolition to make way for the Dan Ryan and Stevenson Expressways. While I'm not sure if this fire was intentional, it occurred just before the expressway construction began. It's also interesting to note that this location was just one block south of where Engine 28’s station would be built a year or so later. The time recorded was 1:36 PM in the afternoon.

These images give a rare glimpse into a significant moment in Chicago’s history. The city was rapidly changing, with new infrastructure projects reshaping neighborhoods. Fires like this one often served as both a warning and a catalyst for change. It's fascinating to see how these events played out in real-time, especially when you consider the impact they had on the community and the city’s development over the years.
