On May 4, 2011, the Waukegan Fire Department responded to a major blaze at the vacant Salvation Army store located at 133 S. Genesee Street. The fire, which was later determined to be an act of arson, resulted in the complete destruction of the building and required the efforts of firefighters from multiple departments to bring under control. Fortunately, no one was injured during the incident.
A suspect has since been arrested in connection with the fire. According to reports, Gregory D. Flesher, a 48-year-old local business owner who had previously run for mayor and for the Lake County Board, was taken into custody on charges of arson and criminal damage to property. Authorities allege that Flesher used bolt cutters to gain entry to the abandoned building early on the morning of the fire and then set it using fireworks and gasoline.
Jeff Rudolph, a local photographer, captured images of the scene, which were later published as part of a news story. A detailed article from *The Chicago Tribune* highlighted the case, noting that Flesher is also under investigation for a separate fire in Canada. On May 19, a deadly fire broke out in an apartment building in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, resulting in the death of a 48-year-old woman. While Flesher has not been formally charged in that case, he reportedly admitted to starting the fire during questioning about the Waukegan incident.
