4-story roof fire in Glenview 5-22-11

On a stormy Sunday night after 10 PM, the Glenview 9-1-1 center received multiple calls about a fire at 2700 Summit Drive. When emergency crews arrived at the four-story L-shaped apartment building, they found smoke and flames on the roof. The initial response included Glenview Engines 6 and 13, Battalion 6, Ambulance 6, and Glenview Truck 14, which was temporarily operating with Engine 8R. Northfield Truck 29 also responded, and it turned out to be the first unit on the scene because Glenview Truck 14 had been using a spare engine. As the situation developed, the alarm was upgraded to a Code 4, bringing in additional units like Glenview Engine 8, Glenview Ambulance 7, Northbrook Truck 12, and Morton Grove Squad 4. Notably, Northbrook Truck 12 had just returned from another Code 4 fire in their area when this call came in. Firefighters from both Northbrook Truck 12 and Northfield Truck 29 quickly deployed their aerial ladders to the roof, and the fire was swiftly contained to its point of origin. Despite the intensity of the blaze, the structure remained largely intact, and no injuries were reported. Glenview Truck 14 was using Engine 8R, which provided more storage space than the usual reserve unit, making it better suited for carrying all necessary equipment. Meanwhile, Glenview Engine 6 was seen on the scene with their newly acquired Pierce Arrow XT engine, showcasing the department’s ongoing efforts to modernize their fleet. Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro arrived at the location, though by the time they got there, the fire had already been extinguished. Larry has a small photo gallery available online for those interested in seeing more details of the incident. The quick response and efficient coordination between the various fire departments helped prevent further damage and ensured the safety of the building's occupants. It was a clear example of how well-prepared emergency services can handle unexpected incidents, even under challenging weather conditions.
