Double fatal fire in Chicago, 2-28-21

Excerpts from abc7chicago.com: A tragic house fire occurred early Sunday morning in the 8600-block of South Hermitage in Gresham, claiming the lives of a 10-year-old girl and her mother. According to family members, Ieashia Ford and her daughter Porsche were asleep when the fire broke out. The family believes the fire was not an accident, but rather the result of a deliberate act. Four other individuals were hospitalized following the incident, including the mother’s boyfriend and two cousins. All are expected to make a full recovery, while authorities continue to investigate the cause of the blaze. Firefighters arrived quickly and managed to rescue six people from the home, but tragically, only four survived. Concern has been raised about the possibility of arson, as the fire reportedly occurred hours after a heated argument between the mother and an individual who had allegedly been harassing her. "He was sending her threatening text messages and even said he was going to set her house on fire," shared family member Felicia White. Although an arson unit was present at the scene, investigators have not yet confirmed the cause of the fire and are still treating it as a joint death and fire investigation. From CFD Media on Twitter: At 8624 S. Hermitage, a working fire with six victims was reported. Two of the victims were in critical condition and taken to Little Company of Mary. All adults, and no smoke detectors were heard. An update revealed that both critically injured patients at Little Company of Mary have since passed away. One may be younger than initially thought. Another update identified one victim as a girl around 12 years old, and the other as an adult female. The cause of the fire remains unknown, though the Office of the Fire Inspector (OFI) is on the scene. The four adults transported to Christ Medical Center are recovering well. Meanwhile, the two females at Little Company of Mary have died. Fire safety teams will be conducting checks and distributing smoke detectors in the area of 8624 Hermitage at 10 am today. Crews are also handing out smoke detectors and safety information near the scene of the fatal fire. It's a good reminder for everyone to check their smoke detectors and ensure batteries are fresh — every second can save a life in a fire. Special Agent Mitch Kushner, along with veteran Zoe and new recruit GG from the State Fire Marshal’s Office, are assisting in the ongoing investigation to determine the origin and cause of the fire.
