The Courier-News recently published an article about a charity boxing event that’s making a big impact in the Aurora community. Now entering its third year, the Tuition Knock Out, organized by the Aurora chapter of the National Latino Peace Officers Association (NLPOA), has grown significantly. This year, the event has moved to a larger venue at East Aurora High School, as the group aims to raise more funds for a deserving local student.
The scholarship on the line is nothing short of impressive: it covers two full years of tuition at either Waubonsee Community College or Elgin Community College, allowing the recipient to earn an associate’s degree without any out-of-pocket costs. That’s a huge opportunity for someone who might not otherwise have the means to pursue higher education.
The event promises an exciting mix of amateur and exhibition fights, with 15 amateur bouts starting at 2 p.m., followed by eight high-energy exhibition matches featuring police and fire department members from Aurora, Elgin, and surrounding areas. The main event this year is a highly anticipated showdown between Aurora Police Investigator Erik Swastek and Aurora Fire Lt. Jeremy Allway, set to determine who gets the bragging rights in the city.
Aurora Police Sgt. Alfredo Dean, the NLPOA chapter president, explained that the organization made the switch from smaller scholarships to a full-ride award to give students the best chance to succeed. "We want the student to not have to spend a penny," he said. Last year, Cristina Martinez was awarded full tuition to Elgin Community College thanks to the event, which has raised over $15,000 in scholarships since 2012.
Last year’s event at LaSierra De Aurora was a huge success, raising $20,000. This year, the organizers are hoping to top that number. The exhibition fight card includes several notable matchups, including past competitor Richard Irvin, who lost last year but is back for another shot. Other participants include officers from various departments, adding to the excitement and community spirit.
Tickets for the event are available at $15 for adults and $5 for children aged 6 to 12. VIP seating is also offered for $50. You can purchase tickets through the official website, and more information about the NLPOA scholarship program is available online.
Whether you're a boxing fan, a supporter of first responders, or simply looking for a fun way to support local education, the Tuition Knock Out is an event worth attending. It's a night filled with action, pride, and a meaningful cause.
Thanks, Dan.
