A tragic incident has left the Orland Park community in mourning after a local firefighter lost his life in a traffic collision on Sunday morning. According to CBS2Chicago, Wesley Peak, 36, a seven-year veteran of the Orland Fire Protection District, was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 57 near Matteson. The accident occurred around 6:30 a.m., and Peak was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:43 a.m.
Peak, who lived on Marquette Place in Manteno, was en route to work when the crash happened. Fire Chief Ken Brucki expressed deep sorrow over the loss, stating that Peak had a positive impact on many lives. "It is equally heartbreaking for the organization and his family," Brucki said in a statement.
The Chicago Tribune has released details about the funeral arrangements for Peak. A visitation will be held from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday at Colonial Chapel, located at 15525 S. 73rd Ave. in Orland Park. His funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Friday at Parkview Christian Church, followed by burial at Peotone Cemetery.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash, which took place on I-57 near 190th Street. Peak is survived by his wife, Melissa; son, Jaxson; parents, William and Linda; and three brothers. The family has requested that donations be made to the Jaxson Memorial Fund instead of flowers.
This loss has deeply affected the fire department and the wider community, as Peak was known for his dedication and kindness. Colleagues and friends are expected to gather to honor his memory and celebrate his life.
