China's first non-food fuel ethanol plant put into operation

COFCO expresses that the supply of raw cassava is not a problem. On December 25th, the reporter learned from COFCO's Biochemical Energy Division that COFCO's fuel ethanol project using cassava as raw material has just been put into production in Beihai, Guangxi Autonomous Region. This is the first non-food fuel ethanol production project in the country and can produce 200,000 tons of fuel ethanol for vehicles. From February 2008, the district will close sales of E10 vehicle ethanol gasoline.
According to the person in charge of the COFCO Biochemical Energy Division, the project was built in the Hepu County Industrial Park in Beihai City. The project started on December 24 last year and covers an area of 550 acres. The total investment is 1.46 billion yuan, which is divided into two phases. Among them, the first phase of the fuel ethanol project will invest 760 million yuan, with an annual output of 200,000 tons of fuel ethanol, 50,000 tons of fiber feed, 29.7 million cubic meters of biogas, and 50,000 tons of carbon dioxide; the second phase of the project will depend on market demand and the supply of cassava raw materials. And set. When asked by reporters whether the self-produced cassava in Guangxi could supply the project for long-term production, the person in charge said that the cassava output in the Guangxi region currently accounts for 60% of the country's total, with an area of 1.4 million mu of planting potential. COFCO Group is introducing high-quality cassava varieties from Thailand in an effort to increase yields. In addition, Southeast Asian countries also have cassava supply, and imports may be considered when prices are appropriate. Therefore, using cassava to produce fuel ethanol feedstock is not a problem. The person in charge emphasized in particular that the production of fuel ethanol from cassava signifies that China's fuel ethanol production has moved towards non-grainification.
On the same day, the reporter also interviewed Jiang Kejun, director of the Energy Market Analysis Office of the Energy Research Institute of the National Development and Reform Commission. Jiang Kejun said that the National Development and Reform Commission is trying to produce fuel ethanol in various ways. The cassava method in Beihai City is one of the non-food methods and has received support from the state.
It is understood that, as an alternative energy source, fuel ethanol with corn as its main raw material has developed rapidly in recent years, which has eased the situation of energy shortage to some extent, but excessive development has also brought about hidden dangers in food security. Data shows that in recent years, the processing capacity of China's biofuel industry has expanded too quickly, and the growth rate has exceeded the growth level of corn production. Between 2001 and 2005, the domestic corn processing volume increased by 84%, while the corn output during the same period only increased by 21.9%, which is far below the speed of expansion of industrial processing capacity. Therefore, the National Development and Reform Commission called for a corn fuel ethanol project this year. As an alternative energy project, the non-grainized cassava production fuel ethanol process is increasingly showing industrial advantages.
