Excerpts from Fox6now.com:
Three children were hit by a vehicle while crossing the street near 22nd Street and Center Street on Thursday, October 24th, in the evening. One of them lost their life, and the driver did not stop at the scene.
The hit-and-run accident occurred around 5:30 p.m., when the driver ran a red light. The crash involved a 10-year-old boy, a 6-year-old girl, and a 4-year-old girl, along with two vehicles. Authorities are still unsure whether all three children were struck by both cars, but both vehicles fled the scene. The 6-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the hospital, while the other two children—along with her sister and cousin—are currently in critical condition.
The vehicle responsible for the crash was described as a 2007–2009 Saturn Aura, gray in color, with front-end damage and tinted windows. Police are urging anyone with information to come forward.
Excerpts from an earlier article at jsonline.com:
For the next two months, the Milwaukee Police Department will be sharing the names, booking photos, and arrest details of individuals convicted of felony reckless driving and/or fleeing from officers. This new initiative, called “Keep MKE’s Streets Safe,†aims to increase public awareness and deter dangerous behavior on local roads.
Many of those arrested for these offenses have prior criminal records, and 32 individuals arrested this year have been caught fleeing from police at least twice before.
The announcement followed a recent collision that injured three people on North 35th Street, which happened after a police chase. Officers had initially pursued a stolen vehicle linked to an armed robbery and home invasion reported earlier that day. The suspect failed to pull over during a traffic stop, leading to a high-speed pursuit. Eventually, the officers ended the chase, but the driver continued to evade them recklessly before crashing into another car.
Currently, police are permitted to pursue vehicles involved in violent crimes, drug-related activities, or reckless driving. However, these incidents continue to raise concerns about the safety of both officers and civilians.
On August 1st, Lequon McCoy, 19, was killed when a car being chased by police reached speeds up to 80 mph and ran a red light, striking his Jeep Renegade at North 12th and West Locust streets.
Another tragic incident occurred on April 18th, when 18-year-old Larenzo Jones was fatally injured during a police chase that began after a shooting left two girls and a boy wounded. Jones was in the suspect’s vehicle.
In June 2018, Officer Charles Irvine Jr., 23, was killed and his partner, Officer Matthew Schulze, was seriously injured in a rollover crash during a pursuit of a reckless driver on the city's northwest side.
