From Drew Smith:
The 1994 Spartan/S&S Tanker is now considered a total loss. During its annual maintenance inspection, it was discovered that the oak planks used in the mounting between the tank frame and the chassis frame had developed significant fractures. The vehicle was sent to Alexis Fire Equipment for repairs. As part of the process, the tank was removed, and it was then revealed that both chassis frame rails and both tank frame rails were severely corroded. The cost to repair the tank—part of the overall body—was estimated to be in the tens of thousands of dollars. Further inspection showed that the chassis frame was not repairable due to extensive pitting. The top of the frame rails had corrosion running the entire length, while the sides had deep pitting, especially around the suspension mounts. In some areas, the pitting was so severe that even a light tap with a welding hammer caused it to worsen. This level of damage made the chassis unsalvageable.
