New tanker for Prospect Heights (more)

The 1994 Spartan/S&S Tanker has been declared a total loss. During its annual maintenance inspection, it was discovered that the oak planks connecting the tank frame to the chassis frame had developed significant fractures. The vehicle was sent to Alexis Fire Equipment for repairs. As part of the process, the tank was removed, and further damage was uncovered: both chassis frame rails and tank frame rails were severely corroded. The repair costs for the tankâ€”part of the overall bodyâ€”were estimated in the tens of thousands of dollars. Upon closer examination, the chassis frame was deemed unrepairable due to pitting along the top and deep corrosion on the sides. The side pitting, located near the suspension mounts, was so severe that it exceeded half the thickness of the frame. The top pitting extended the entire length of each rail, and in some areas, even light tapping with a welding hammer caused the damage to worsen. This level of structural degradation made the vehicle unsafe and impractical to restore.
