This report comes from Larry Shapiro:
The Prospect Heights Fire Department was called to a house fire around 3:00 AM on Monday at 1201 N. Stratford Road, near Rand Road. As the firefighters were en route, they were informed that a 14-year-old boy was trapped inside the home while other family members had already escaped. Several police officers tried to locate the boy but were forced to retreat due to intense smoke and fire conditions.
Arlington Heights Engine 2 arrived first on the scene, where heavy flames were burning in the center of the house. Unfortunately, the street lacked hydrants, so supply lines were stretched to a nearby Arlington Heights street in one direction and to a shopping center across Rand Road in the other. Water pressure was an issue initially when Engine 2 faced mechanical problems, which delayed water delivery. Additional lines were later supplied by Prospect Heights Tower 9 to help contain the fire.
A Box Alarm was issued, along with several ambulances, as two adults from the house and three police officers needed medical attention. One ambulance remained on standby in case the missing boy could still be rescued.
It was later confirmed that the boy was not at home and was found safe elsewhere. Two individuals were taken to the hospital for evaluation. The incident highlights the challenges faced by emergency responders during a fast-moving, high-risk situation.
