Tianjin launches new regulations to increase pesticide regulatory standards

In an effort to further enhance the quality and safety of agricultural products, Tianjin Municipality has taken decisive steps to strengthen the regulation of pesticide production and usage at the source. In line with national guidelines issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and other relevant authorities, the city has recently introduced stricter regulations aimed at ensuring the safety and effectiveness of pesticide products. Tianjin has raised the standards for pesticide residue levels and the concentration of active ingredients in pesticide formulations. Starting from January 8th next year, the approval of new pesticide product names will be suspended, and all pesticides must now use either the common name or a simplified version of it. Furthermore, as of July 1, 2008, pesticide products available on the market will no longer be allowed to display their product names, reinforcing transparency and standardization in labeling. The regulation also sets clear limits on the variation in active ingredient content across different grades of the same pesticide formulation. The difference in effective ingredient content between formulations of the same product should not exceed 5%. Additionally, any additives such as penetrants or synergists must not reduce the concentration of the active ingredient. Pesticide labels must prominently display the product's name, and the trademark area should not be larger than the area used for the product name. To ensure full compliance with these new rules, Tianjin has established 300 green farm chain stores across 12 agricultural districts and counties. These stores are designed to completely block high-toxicity pesticides from entering the market. The city has also implemented comprehensive systems for tracking agricultural inputs, including "sales ledgers" and "integrity cards." As part of its commitment to enforcing these new regulations, Tianjin has designated 2008 as the "Year of Pesticide Registration Management," signaling a strong focus on improving regulatory oversight and promoting safer agricultural practices. This initiative reflects the city’s broader goal of ensuring food safety and sustainable farming in the long term.
