On June 30, Maoming Petrochemical Company officially launched the start-up phase of its newly built 350,000-ton-per-year high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plant, marking a significant milestone in its ongoing expansion. Alongside this, a 640,000-ton-per-year pyrolysis gasoline hydrogenation unit was also completed and put into operation.
This HDPE facility is one of four key projects under the company’s 1 million-ton-per-year ethylene renovation and expansion initiative, with an investment exceeding 600 million yuan. It represents the most advanced production technology in Asia, featuring the largest single-line capacity and cutting-edge domestic technology. The project has been designed to meet growing market demand for high-quality HDPE products.
The technical sophistication of this installation is among the highest in the four new projects. Several critical components, such as reactor circulation pumps and catalyst activation furnaces, were imported from nine different countries, with a total of 135 pieces of equipment brought in. Many of the process systems are being used for the first time in China. The facility employs Chevron-Phillips’ loop pipe slurry process technology, allowing for a wide range of HDPE products, including blown films, injection molding materials, pipe materials, and cable sheathing. With a single-line production capacity, it can produce over 20 types of HDPE products, enhancing the company's product diversity.
In addition, the 640,000-ton-per-year pyrolysis gasoline hydrogenation unit, which cost 110 million yuan, significantly boosts the plant’s benzene production capacity—from 250,000 tons per year to 640,000 tons—without halting existing operations. This will help address the current shortage of benzene-based products in the market.
HDPE is known for its excellent properties, such as resistance to aging, low-temperature performance, acid and alkali resistance, high crystallinity, good insulation, and ease of processing. It is widely used in home appliances, electronics, and textiles. However, there remains a significant supply-demand imbalance in China, with over 50% of domestic HDPE demand met through imports. In 2023, China’s HDPE demand reached 4.23 million tons, up 11.5% from the previous year, while imports increased by 5.4% to 2.316 million tons.
The completion of the 350,000-ton-per-year HDPE plant at Maoming Petrochemical is expected to alleviate the supply gap and reduce reliance on foreign imports. Furthermore, it fills a critical production gap in Guangdong Province, strengthening the region’s petrochemical industry.
