Pearl River Delta: Implementing Vehicle Emission Standards

According to Voice of China’s “Yangguang News” report, starting from today, the Pearl River Delta region in Guangdong has officially implemented the five national emission standards for motor vehicles, stopped the registration of registration of vehicles for the National IV emission standard, and registration of new vehicles. Prior to this, China's Beijing, Shanghai and other places have taken the lead in implementing the emission standards for motor vehicles.

The exhaust emission standards for motor vehicles are to control the emission of nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and suspended particles of motor vehicles. Compared with the existing National IV emission standards, the five standards of motor vehicles have further increased emissions. The requirements for control, in which the limits of nitrogen oxide emissions are strictly from 25% to 28%, the particulate emission limit is strictly 82%, and the new indicator of pollutant control—the number of particulate particles—is increased. In addition, the National IV standard stipulates that the sulfur content in one kilogram of gasoline is 50 milligrams, while the sulfur content in the national five standard is only 10 milligrams.

From State I to State V, the emission of pollutants from a single motor vehicle should be reduced by 30% to 50% for each additional emission standard. According to the notice of the Guangdong Provincial Department of Environmental Protection, starting today, the National Five Standard for light gasoline vehicles will be implemented in the Pearl River Delta Region. On July 1, this year, the National Five Standard for light gasoline vehicles will be implemented in the east, west and north of Guangdong Province. The bus, sanitation, and postal industry vehicles in the triangle region implement the national five standard for heavy-duty diesel vehicles.
