Here's a report from Eric Haak regarding the Still & Box Alarm fire that occurred yesterday on Blue Island Avenue:
About 11:50 AM on Sunday, Engine 23 reported smoke coming from the roof of a two-story, 400 by 100-foot commercial building located just off the corner of Blue Island and Damen. This structure is part of the large production complex for Hofmeister Hams. The fire was contained shortly after noon by the 4th Battalion. First-arriving units deployed a line on the roof along with a 2½-inch line that went inside. The fire was brought under control relatively quickly. The companies operating at the still included Engine 23 and Tower Ladder 5, Engine 18, and Truck 8, with Battalion 2 and Truck 32 serving as RIT. I didn’t see any of the box engines being used since they were staged down on Cermak. There were roofers working on the building, but no confirmed cause has been reported yet. The first photo below was taken about ten minutes after the first units arrived.

The scene looked intense, but it seems the crews managed to get things under control fairly quickly. It’s always good to see the response time and coordination between the different units. I’ll post more updates as they come in. Stay safe!
