On Sunday at around 11:50 a.m., Engine 23 reported smoke coming from the roof of a two-story, 400 by 100-foot commercial building located just off Blue Island Avenue and Damen Street. This structure is part of the large production complex for Hofmeister Hams. The fire was contained shortly after noon by the 4th Battalion. First-arriving units quickly deployed a line on the roof and sent a 2½-inch attack line inside the building. The fire was brought under control relatively fast.
The companies responding to the still included Engine 23 and Tower Ladder 5, along with Engine 18 and Truck 8. Battalion 2 and Truck 32 served as the Rapid Intervention Team (RIT). I didn’t see any of the box engines in action since they were staged further down on Cermak Street. There were roofers working on the building, but no clear cause had been confirmed yet. The first photo below was taken about 10 minutes after the initial response.
Several images captured the scene from different angles, showing firefighters at work and the extent of the fire damage. These photos give a good sense of how quickly the crews responded and how effectively they managed the situation. It’s always impressive to see how well the Chicago Fire Department handles these incidents, even when they’re unexpected.
