Artificial gas exits Shanghai in ten years to complete the conversion of natural gas

Shanghai has unveiled a comprehensive ten-year gas development plan, aiming to transition its artificial gas users to natural gas by 2015. According to Wang Yizhong, deputy director of the Shanghai Municipal Administration, the city's natural gas consumption is expected to rise from nearly 2 billion cubic meters to 12 billion cubic meters by that time. This announcement was made during his speech at the closing of the 18th World Liquefied Petroleum Gas Forum on September 17. With a history spanning 140 years, Shanghai was the first city in China to use artificial gas. To enhance environmental quality and optimize its energy mix, the city has been working to reduce coal usage and promote cleaner energy sources. Since the early 20th century, when natural gas from the East China Sea began to be developed, and with the start of the West-East Gas Pipeline project in January 2004, Shanghai has gradually integrated natural gas, artificial gas, and liquefied petroleum gas into its energy system. Looking ahead, the city expects natural gas to grow rapidly, while artificial gas will decline, and liquefied petroleum gas may see increased use. To support this shift, Shanghai plans to expand natural gas supply in the western regions, accelerate the import of liquefied petroleum gas, and speed up the construction of pipeline networks and peak-shaving facilities. These efforts aim to ensure a stable and balanced natural gas supply across the city. In areas where pipeline gas is not feasible, the city will continue to rely on liquefied gas. According to recent reports, by 2010, Shanghai is expected to have 3.6 million natural gas users. By 2015, the city will complete the full conversion to natural gas. Additionally, by 2010, Shanghai aims to establish a world-class natural gas pipeline network capable of receiving multiple sources, including "west gas," "east gas," and imported liquefied natural gas. This advanced infrastructure will enable safe and efficient natural gas distribution across central urban areas, suburban zones, and key industrial parks.
