On Sunday afternoon, March 19, 2023, Palatine firefighters were called to a report of smoke on the third floor of an apartment building located at 12 E Dundee Quarter. As crews arrived, they quickly noticed smoke and then flames emerging from the roof, prompting an immediate upgrade to a Code 4 working fire.
Palatine fire crews launched an interior attack with two lines on the third floor, conducting searches throughout the building. However, due to the intense fire in the mansard roof and deteriorating conditions, crews were forced to evacuate and transition to a defensive operation. During the evacuation, a firefighter on a balcony was unable to exit through the interior and called for help. He successfully descended a ground ladder to safety.
The fire spread past the fire wall and eventually reached the adjacent building, causing significant damage to its roof and third floor. Multiple structural collapses occurred in the original building, raising concerns about the stability of the structure.
In addition to Palatine Fire Department, several other area departments responded to the incident, including Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Mount Prospect, Lake Zurich, Barrington, Inverness, Hoffman Estates, Rolling Meadows, and the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District. This list is likely incomplete, as many more units may have been involved during the large-scale response.
Firefighters from Palatine Tower 85, Buffalo Grove Tower 25, and Arlington Heights Tower 1 deployed master streams to control the blaze. The scene remained active for hours as crews worked to fully extinguish the fire and secure the area.
