Here's an excerpt from postandcourier.com:
Latoya Riley, a resident of Charleston, SC, was preparing pork chops for dinner when the grease in the pan caught fire. In a hurry to contain the flames, she moved the pan to the sink, only to burn her hands in the process. As water hit the hot grease, flames erupted unexpectedly.
She immediately called 911, and the Charleston Fire Department arrived quickly. Captain Ryan Delk, who was on duty, shared that the firefighters had just started their own dinner when they received the call.
Riley waited outside for her mother to come pick her up and take her to the hospital for treatment of her burns. While waiting, she remained calm and composed, showing great resilience during a stressful moment.
After the fire was under control, Captain Delk noticed something unusual—something was still baking in the oven. He took it out and, with a sense of responsibility, decided to finish cooking the pork chops using a new pan. He placed the meal on the table for the family’s children and even cleaned up the kitchen afterward.
“She had two small kids at home,†Delk explained. “I didn’t want them to go hungry or wait until 10 or 11 o’clock for dinner.â€
The city of Charleston’s Customer Service Initiative Committee recently recognized Delk’s kind gesture with a quarterly customer service award. His actions not only helped a family in need but also reflected the true spirit of public service.
Delk emphasized that being a firefighter is more than just putting out fires. “It’s about being there for people, showing compassion, and doing what’s right—even when no one is watching,†he said.
