On Sunday afternoon, March 19, 2023, Palatine firefighters were called to respond to a report of smoke on the third floor of an apartment building located at 12 E Dundee Quarter. Upon arrival, Palatine police officers observed smoke and then flames emerging from the roof, prompting the incident to be upgraded to a Code 4 working fire.
Firefighters from Palatine initiated an interior attack with two hose lines on the third floor, conducting searches throughout the building. However, due to the intense volume of fire in the mansard roof and deteriorating conditions above, crews were forced to evacuate and transition to a defensive operation. During the evacuation, a firefighter on a balcony called for help after being unable to exit through the interior. He was successfully rescued by descending a ground ladder.
The fire managed to bypass the fire wall and spread into the adjacent building, causing significant damage to its roof and third floor. Multiple structural collapses occurred in the original building, highlighting the severity of the blaze.
In response to the growing fire, units from Palatine Tower 85, Buffalo Grove Tower 25, and Arlington Heights Tower 1 deployed master streams to control the flames. The incident drew the attention of several area departments, including Palatine, Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Mount Prospect, Lake Zurich, Barrington, Inverness, Hoffman Estates, Rolling Meadows, and the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District. It is likely that more agencies were also involved but not listed here.
