In several offices here, a unique air-conditioning system is making a big difference. The system consists of black-insulated pipes and a small cabinet about one meter tall. When the control button is pressed, a gentle breeze flows through the window at the top of the room. What’s surprising is that this cool air isn’t generated by conventional cooling methods—it’s drawn from deep underground, more than a dozen meters below the surface.
This technology is known as the ground-source heat pump system. It uses groundwater or low-grade thermal energy stored in the soil to provide heating in winter and cooling in summer. By converting this natural energy, it offers an environmentally friendly, energy-efficient, and cost-effective solution. This system is considered one of the most economical and sustainable central air-conditioning systems globally.
According to recent reports, the application of this technology in Changzhi is still in its early stages. However, with support from the environmental protection department, the city is actively promoting and implementing this advanced system. Some residential communities and office buildings have already begun installing this innovative refrigeration and heating system, marking a significant step toward a greener and more energy-conscious future.
