In a significant step towards sustainable development, a wastewater treatment facility costing 1.5 million yuan was officially launched in Nanchuan, Chongqing, to treat coking wastewater using mineralized waste. This marks another milestone for the Chongqing Bosai Mining Group as it continues to advance its circular economy and clean production initiatives.
The journey began in 1994 when Bossa Group established the Yanziyan Aluminum Mine Plant in Nanchuan, focusing on basic mineral extraction. However, the process left behind vast amounts of slag, which piled up into massive heaps. During heavy rains, contaminated water mixed with the slag, causing severe environmental damage. Over 300,000 tons of bauxite slag became an environmental burden for the company.
In response, Bossa Group conducted extensive research and, in 2001, invested 250 million yuan to set up Pioneer Alumina Co., Ltd., aiming to convert the slag into alumina. To support this initiative, they partnered with the Nanchuan Coking Plant and invested over 80 million yuan to establish Daxing Coal Chemical Company. The coking plant now utilizes more than 10 million cubic meters of gas annually, providing energy for the alumina plant and generating over 5 million yuan in annual profit. Today, over 200,000 tons of slag have been reused, with the remaining 100,000 tons now considered a valuable resource.
However, a new challenge emerged: the large volume of toxic coking wastewater generated during the process. As an international issue, treating such wastewater requires advanced technology. At the end of last year, Bossa Group, in collaboration with Tongji University's State Key Laboratory of Pollution Control and Resource Utilization Research, and the College of Biological Engineering at Chongqing Institute of Technology, signed an agreement to develop a new treatment process specifically for high-sulfur, high-nitrogen coking wastewater.
This innovative approach is expected to achieve internationally leading standards in wastewater treatment. Currently, Bossa Group is constructing a treatment tank with a daily capacity of 20 tons. Once completed, the facility will enable the recycling of previously discharged wastewater, significantly reducing costs for the coking plant by hundreds of thousands of yuan annually. This project highlights the company’s commitment to environmental protection and sustainable industrial practices.
