The first 6DK-28 diesel engine, independently developed and manufactured by Shaanxi Chai Heavy Industry Co., Ltd., has recently received approval from the China Classification Society and shipowners, marking a major milestone in the localization of this engine model. This achievement represents a significant step forward for the company in enhancing its domestic capabilities in marine engine production.
The 6DK-28 is a newly developed model based on patented technology from Japan's Daihatsu Diesel Engine Co., Ltd. To support product series development and expand market reach, Shaanxi Chai Heavy Industry initiated the localization project for the 6DK-28 diesel engine. This initiative aimed to adapt the design and manufacturing process to meet local standards while maintaining high performance and reliability.
During the development of the first 6DK-28 unit, engineers thoroughly analyzed and integrated the original technology, ensuring full understanding and adaptation. The team completed all stages of production, including component processing, assembly, and commissioning. Following rigorous testing—such as bench running-in tests, performance tests, back pressure tests, and exhaust emission tests—the engine met all required technical specifications and successfully passed certification from both the China Classification Society and shipowners.
With a compact design and excellent performance, the 6DK-28 delivers a rated power of 1,912 kW and a maximum power of 2,100 kW. It is ideal for use as a main engine in container ships ranging from 500 to 600 TEU. The successful development of this engine fills a critical gap in Shaanxi Diesel Heavy Industry’s product lineup, particularly in the 2,000 kW power range. It not only enriches and optimizes the company’s diesel engine series but also strengthens its position in the broader marine propulsion market. This accomplishment sets a solid foundation for future growth and competitiveness in the global shipping industry.
