The first 6DK-28 diesel engine, independently developed and manufactured by Shaanxi Chai Heavy Industry Co., Ltd., recently received approval from the China Classification Society and shipowners, marking a major milestone in the localization of this engine model. This achievement represents a significant step forward in the company’s efforts to enhance its technological capabilities and expand its market presence.
The 6DK-28 is a new product developed by Shaanxi Diesel Heavy Industry using patented technology from Japan's Daihatsu Diesel Engine Co., Ltd. To ensure scalability and support long-term growth, the company initiated the localization project for the 6DK-28 engine. This initiative aimed to build a complete product line and increase the market reach of its diesel engines.
During the development of the first 6DK-28 unit, engineers and technical staff built upon the lessons learned from the localization of the 8DK-28 model. They thoroughly studied, understood, and integrated the original technology, successfully completing the localization process for parts manufacturing, assembly, and commissioning. After rigorous testing—including bench running-in tests, performance tests, back-pressure tests, and exhaust smoke tests—the engine met all required technical specifications and passed the certification process with both the China Classification Society and shipowners.
With a compact design and outstanding performance, the 6DK-28 diesel engine delivers a rated power of 1912 kW and a maximum power of 2100 kW. It is well-suited as a main engine for container ships ranging from 500 to 600 TEU. The successful development of this engine fills a critical gap in Shaanxi Diesel Heavy Industry’s product lineup, particularly in the 2000 kW power range. It also enriches and optimizes the company’s diesel engine series, laying a solid foundation for future expansion into broader ship propulsion markets.
