On December 25, the 5 million tons per year atmospheric distillation unit at Wuhan Petrochemical Plant was officially completed by China Communications. Once fully operational, this facility will significantly enhance the company's overall refining capacity, bringing it to 6.5 million tons per year. This marks a major milestone in the plant’s ongoing efforts to modernize its operations and meet growing regional energy demands.
The project, which began construction in September of last year, is part of a larger oil upgrading and refining initiative. The development includes several key units such as a 1.2 million tons/year delayed coking unit, a 1.9 million tons/year coal-to-diesel hydrogenation unit, a 60,000 tons/year sulfur recovery system, a 2 million tons/year hydrocracking unit, a 1.8 million tons/year catalytic feedstock hydrogenation unit, and an 80,000 cubic meters/hour hydrogen production facility. When all these units are completed and operating at full capacity, Wuhan Petrochemical's total processing capability will reach 8 million tons per year.
This expansion is expected to not only supply high-quality gasoline and diesel to Central China but also provide essential raw materials for Wuhan's 800,000 tons/year ethylene production facility. This integration supports the region’s petrochemical industry and strengthens local energy security.
Additionally, the 1.2 million tons/year delayed coking unit is nearing completion, while the 60,000 tons/year sulfur recovery system and the 1.9 million tons/year coal-based diesel hydrogenation equipment are currently under construction. These developments highlight the continuous progress being made to expand and optimize Wuhan Petrochemical's refining capabilities.
