Breaking the foreign technology monopoly and independently developing the first large thermal power unit

In 2005, a major milestone was achieved in China’s high-end equipment manufacturing industry when the first 600MW thermal power unit control system with independent intellectual property rights, developed and produced by Hangzhou-based enterprises, was successfully deployed at the Shaanxi Guohua Jinjie Coal and Electricity Project. This marked a significant breakthrough in overcoming foreign technology monopolies and laid the foundation for domestic technological self-reliance. Hangzhou Heli Time Co., Ltd., which pioneered the development of this advanced 600MW control system, has steadily moved from the background to the forefront of the automation industry. Operating quietly for over a decade within the Hangzhou Economic and Technological Development Zone, the company has continuously driven innovation, breaking through foreign technological barriers and ending the era of high-cost foreign solutions in industrial automation. The journey of "Heli Time" reflects the power of independent innovation. At first glance, their factory in the electromechanical park may seem unremarkable, but it is home to cutting-edge technology that supports critical infrastructure like nuclear power plants and urban subway systems. The company is behind the national "HOLLiAS series products industrialization" project, which focuses on large-scale complex process automation control. With a total investment of around 100 million yuan and a production capacity of 1 billion yuan, the project is expected to be officially approved this year, becoming the largest professional automation manufacturing base in China. As a pioneer in providing large-scale computer systems for nuclear power plants, "Heli Time" is also the only domestic manufacturer to enter the field of urban rail transit automation. Through continuous research and development, the company has completed numerous projects at an international level, filling gaps in the domestic market. Since entering the thermal power sector in the early 1990s, "Heli Time" has seen its automation products—such as the "Helix" series—successfully applied in various power units, including 50MW, 135MW, and 300MW. The successful deployment of the 600MW unit represents a decade of accumulated innovation and practical experience. Beyond thermal power, the company has made inroads into nuclear power, petrochemicals, and other key industries. In 1993, it exported its first computer system to Pakistan’s Chashma Nuclear Power Plant, marking China’s first major export of a nuclear power computer system. To date, "Heli Time" has been involved in over 40 nuclear power instrumentation projects, with its automation systems now widely used across China’s operational and under-construction nuclear plants. According to Wang Changli, President of Hangzhou Hollysys Automation Co., Ltd., "Independent innovation has allowed our technical capabilities to continuously approach international standards." He emphasized that innovation requires long-term focus, clear demand identification, and sustained effort. On average, the company invests 15% of its annual revenue into R&D, fueling rapid growth and enabling it to outpace industry averages, even doubling in size year after year. Over the past decade, "Heli Time" has grown into a leading player in the automation sector, backed by a strong portfolio of independent technologies. Its success serves as a testament to the potential of Chinese enterprises to lead in high-tech fields through persistent innovation and strategic vision.
