Mori Seiki has introduced an advanced machine control feature designed to counteract thermal displacement in structural components caused by temperature fluctuations and heat from ball screws and motors, significantly minimizing machining errors. The system employs thermal sensors mounted on the top or column of the machine to detect temperature changes in real time. Using this data, it predicts displacement and automatically adjusts the position of the spindle and tool holder accordingly.
Traditionally, controlling thermal expansion required preheating the machine before operations or increasing cooling efforts in the workshop—methods that are both time-consuming and costly. Mori Seiki’s new function eliminates the need for such practices, ensuring consistent machining accuracy regardless of environmental conditions or processing routines.
This innovative control system uses computer simulations to determine the optimal placement of thermal sensors based on the machine's thermal behavior. While the machine is in operation, high-speed calculations are performed to adjust the feed axis position dynamically. The feature was first implemented in the "NL" series NC rotary table, with testing results showing that thermal displacement was reduced to between 5 and 8 micrometers after a 10°C temperature change over four hours. Without the function, the displacement reached up to 50 micrometers under the same conditions.
The technology will be showcased at JIMTOF 2006 (the 23rd Japan Machine Tool Exhibition) at the Tokyo Ariake International Convention and Exhibition Center from November 1st to 8th, 2006. It will be available on the NC rotary table "NL2500" and the vertical machining center "NV6000 DGG." Following the exhibition, the feature will be rolled out to the "N" series NC rotary tables and MC12 models, marking a significant advancement in precision and efficiency for modern manufacturing.
